This report examines what difference it makes for the individual citizen to be granted an early retirement pension. The methodology is to use the well-documented variation between municipalities when granting early retirement pensions. The element of variation in the municipal grants makes it possible to draw up a study design with a very high level of evidence. By using mathematical causal models and registry data, the report analyses the effect of early retirement on citizens, compared with other citizens with seemingly identical problems who have not been granted early retirement. The results of the report break away from the assumption that early retirement leads to poorer health and social isolation. On the contrary, the report shows that citizens who are granted early retirement often improve their health and are less likely to be divorced.
